THE JOB

Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency is looking for a senior correspondent for its Kyiv Bureau starting in January 2023. You must speak at least some Ukrainian and/or Russian, be able to write clean copy in English, have some knowledge of the country and already have several years’ experience in journalism.

You will help coordinate our daily coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine as part of a team of reporters, photographers and videographers headed up by AFP’s Kyiv Bureau Chief and the regional News Editor.

We expect you to be based primarily in Kyiv but travelling regularly around the country for news and feature stories and coordinating with bureau colleagues, AFP’s network of stringers and the agency’s Warsaw-based staff. You can be asked to report from frontline areas in the south and east of the country if you have previous security training or once you have received such training from AFP.

The role may require long working days, dictated by the news agenda, and will include working some weekends and public holidays.

You should have a keen eye for the visual aspect of coverage and coordinate with the photo, video and graphics departments.

You will ensure the credibility and reliability of our coverage.

You will closely monitor social media (Twitter, Facebook, Telegram, Instagram) and strictly adhere to the Agency's guidelines on social media activity.

You will contribute to the fight against misinformation by offering any assistance needed to the digital investigation teams in the network and you will ensure that you are trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. Online training is available here.

As a general rule, you will commit to respecting AFP's ethics charter as well as all the editorial guidelines in force and in the Agency's style guide.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
