Sports agency SID and aexea test automatic writing of sports news

The leading German sports news agency Sport-Informations-Dienst (SID), a subsidiary of AFP, is launching a pilot project to test the automatic writing of sports fixture lists in conjunction with German technology partner aexea. The aim is to explore the possibility of producing sports news with technology which uses a data base and algorithms.

Two AFP photo exhibitions featured at Visa pour l’Image

Two contrasting photo exhibitions by AFP will be featured in the International Photojournalism festival Visa pour l’Image which runs from August 30 to September 14 2014 in Perpignan, France. One showcases AFP’s prize-winning coverage of Typhoon Haiyan which struck the Philippines in November 2013, and the other features images taken by children in a Rio favela on the eve of the FIFA World Cup.

Asma Shirazi of Pakistan named 2014 winner of Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism

Global Media Forum, the US branch of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and Agence France-Presse are pleased to announce that Asma Shirazi is the 2014 winner of the Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism. The award will be presented in a ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on October 23rd.

Spanish photographer José Manuel López has won prizes in three news categories in the Px3 Paris photo awards* for his coverage of the massacre of young men in the Syrian civil war. His shocking images of bodies pulled out of the Quweig river in Aleppo earned him a gold medal in the category “Press-General News”, a silver medal in “Press-War” and third place in the overall “Px3 Paris photography prize”.
