AFP Photographers Recognised at WHNPA’s ‘The Eyes of History’ 2025 Contest
Three AFP photographers were recognised at the 2025 edition of the Eyes of History competition, an annual still photojournalism contest organised by the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA).
Jim Watson won first place in the Inauguration 2025 category with a black-and-white photograph of US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office in Washington, signing executive orders on 20 January.

Saul Loeb secured first place in the Insider’s Washington category for his image of former US Vice President Kamala Harris arriving at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the 59th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday". The photo was taken on 3 March 2024.

Loeb also earned third place in the same category for a photograph of Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff travelling aboard an Army Two helicopter to the same event.

Andrew Caballero-Reynolds received an Award of Excellence in the News category for a photograph of people fleeing after shots were fired near the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII victory parade in Kansas City on 14 February 2024.

About the competition
Founded in 1943, the Eyes of History contest initially featured a single grand award, but over time it evolved to include multiple categories. Since 1968, the contest has recognised a Photographer of the Year based on a portfolio of work, awarded the Political Photo of the Year, and presented individual prizes across more than fifteen categories.
The work of AFP photographers has been recognised several times by the WHNPA. In 2024, four AFP photographers covering the White House won thirteen awards at The Eyes of History contest.
