ROLE

The Shanghai bureau chief is responsible for managing AFP’s general, economic, technology and sport news coverage across all media.

Working in close contact with the China bureau chief and news editor in Beijing, the designated candidate leads a team of dedicated local and foreign text, video and photo correspondents.

The Shanghai bureau chief generates and drives story ideas across all platforms, produces his/her own original stories, edits text stories of other reporters and tightly coordinates text, photo and video production from his or her team.

In addition, he or she may be called on to participate in the coverage of major stories elsewhere in China, notably in the case of big political events, summits or natural disasters.

He or she participates in the editorial management of AFP in China taking turns to be on call on evenings and weekends.

He or she can also be asked to edit copy from Beijing writers and also to take weekend shifts.

The bureau chief is responsible for the management of the bureau and takes on administrative and HR issues. He or she also plays a representative role with the local authorities, businesses and consulates and supports AFP’s commercial efforts in coordination with the Beijing bureau chief, the sales manager in Beijing and the regional sales and marketing department in Hong Kong.

He or she has to ensure the reliability of the news production and respect for the agency's editorial policy. He or she has to be aware of the risks and limits of reporting in China and make sure that the bureau’s production cannot be used against the agency.

Candidates should be social media-savvy and responsible of the enforcement of AFP’s rules on social media use by its reporters.

REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for a senior journalist with:

  • Fluent or very proficient Chinese
  • Ability to lead a multimedia team and manage an office with strong organizational skills
  • Enthusiasm, strong ideas, sharp news sense and good writing skills
  • A deft touch for feature/focus/analysis writing across all subjects, including key coverage areas of economy, general and lifestyle news and sports.
  • Ability to work under pressure, including anti-social hours and weekends
  • Native English-language writer (French would be a plus)
  • Video shooting and editing skills a plus
