THE JOB

Global news agency Agence France-Presse is offering an exciting opportunity to be a part of its fast-growing digital verification network, which has taken a frontline role in combating misinformation, fact-checking and monitoring emerging narratives that shape public perceptions of news events around the world.

Based in Montreal, you will focus on misinformation in Canada and write fact-checking stories from around the country. The role requires an ability to work in a fast-paced multimedia newsroom and meet tight deadlines, working in tandem with AFP journalists in the United States and across the world. While you will specialize in fact-check writing, you may also be required to assist with other coverage in the Montreal bureau or to write news stories about disinformation.

You will closely monitor social media and strictly adhere to the Agency's guidelines on social media activity.

As a general rule, you will commit to respecting AFP's ethics charter as well as all the editorial guidelines in force and in the Agency's style guide.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Applicants must have strong writing skills. You will write in English but must also be able to translate articles from French. Good communication skills, both written and oral are necessary, as is an ability to multitask.

The position requires an agile journalist who can easily navigate major social media platforms — including Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, and encrypted chat apps. Experience in digital verification and investigation techniques and tools is desirable but not essential, as appropriate training will be provided.

THE TEAM

The team in Montréal consists of two local francophone journalists, one fact-check journalist, one Bureau Chief and one assistant.

There is also an anglophone journalist based in Ottawa as well as a network of stringers in Toronto and Vancouver.
